Sydney Chinese seniors · Smartphone and AI practice
OpenAID helps Chinese-speaking seniors in Sydney practise useful phone and AI skills in plain language. Small classes, real-phone practice, and patient step-by-step coaching.
Why this class
Family members can help, but they cannot always be there. English notices, government apps, WeChat settings and scam messages all require a little confidence and judgement.
Bank, clinic, school or Medicare messages can be hard to judge at first glance.
myGov, Service NSW, HotDoc and Google Maps are useful, but many seniors are afraid to tap.
Fake banks, fake parcels and fake government alerts are getting harder to recognise.
How it works
Class formats
Small groups are best for building foundations. One-on-one sessions are for families with specific questions or pace needs. Time and location are arranged in advance, usually at a nearby library or public learning space.
Starts with two learners, capped at four. Bring your own phone and keep asking follow-up questions after class.
Focused help with WeChat, photos, Australian apps, scam safety, AI assistance and other practical needs.
Four classes, per person

What we practise
Text size, brightness, notifications, photos, WeChat voice and video, and the features used every day.
Taking photos, organising albums, cloud backup, and keeping important memories easier to find.
When a link, urgent payment request or fake institution appears, pause first and verify.
Use AI to understand English notices, draft replies and prepare questions before appointments.
Google Maps, HotDoc and Service NSW, with a focus on confidence, checking and safety boundaries.
Course schedule
Each class is two hours, split into two halves. Learners bring their own phones and practise directly. Follow-up questions can continue in the learning group after class.

Teacher
I have worked in education and in the IT industry. That combination helps me see a simple gap: AI is moving quickly, but few people are helping older Chinese-speaking learners keep up safely.
Many AI courses exist, but very few are designed for seniors who need calm, practical, everyday guidance. OpenAID focuses on what people can actually use in daily life.
